On April 16th, in Mashantucket Connecticut, the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods will host a fight for the WBC Welterweight Championship of the world between Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz. Ortiz and Berto, while different in many ways, share a couple attributes that should make this an entertaining fight, while it lasts. Both are young. Both have power in either hand. And both need to answer their critics who question their desire to win at all costs.
Andre Berto (27-0), the current WBC Welterweight champion has undeniable talent. He is generally regarded as the best welterweight not named Mayweather or Pacquiao. Berto possesses some of the fastest hands in boxing. His ability to put quick combinations together may be unmatched by anyone in boxing, outside of Manny Pacquiao. To go along with that god given speed, Berto also possesses enough power to put even the toughest opponents to the canvas. This is illustrated by his 78% knockout ratio, 21 in his 27 fights. On the surface, Berto looks to be the complete package. He’s young, fast, strong and most importantly, exciting.
However, not everybody is sold on the young champion. For one, Berto is easily one of the most protected fighters in all of boxing. Lou Dibella has always taken extreme care when match matching his young fighter. He won the WBC title (which was vacated by Floyd Mayweather) by 7th round KO, outclassing the unknown and unheralded Miguel Rodriguez. Since then, Berto has decisioned undersized 140 pound fighters Steve Forbes and Juan Urango, KO’d a post prime Carlos Quintana and sparked Freddy Hernandez in one round. Hernandez had no business in the same ring as Berto. The one time that Berto did fight a top 5 quality Welterweight, I felt he lost the fight. In January of 2009 Berto fought Luis Collazo, a former WBA welterweight champion and all around tough opponent. Berto was staggered in round 1 and appeared to gas as the fight went on. In what ended up being a candidate for Fight of the Year, Berto squeaked out a close unanimous decision. Not everyone was convinced.

Victor Ortiz’ career path has been well documented. ‘Vicious’ was (and some say still is) one of Golden Boy’s brightest young stars. It certainly seemed Ortiz was well on his way to fulfilling that prophecy. While Berto was winning his first major title in early 2009, Ortiz was having success at the division below. Ortiz had amassed an impressive 24-1 record at 140 pounds, 17 of those coming by way of the KO. While Berto could boast about his unmatched speed, Ortiz could say the same about his power. Many of his fights ended with the landing of just one punch. Victor, who has been a career 140 pounder (light welterweight) was ready to take that step up.
That step up came against a fighter names in mid 2009 against Marcos Maidana. Maidana, 25-1 at the time was a relatively unknown brawler, best known for his razor thin decision loss to Andriy Kotelnik. What did standout about Maidana was his unheard of KO ratio, 24 of his 25 wins ending inside the distance. Many felt this would be a true test for Ortiz. How right they were. Both fighters were dropped in the first round. Maidana was dropped twice in the third round and at that point. many felt Ortiz was ready to end it. However, Maidana wanted the fight more. He continued to get up to his feet and proceeded to beat Ortiz into submission, making him surrender in round 6. Golden Boy’s prized prospect had just been beaten. And to make matters worse, he had quit.
Fast forward to 2011. Berto is still the undefeated champion and Ortiz hasn’t lost in the 5 fights since the Maidana defeat. One of these two fighters’ careers may be on the line come April 16th. That’s what makes this fight so intriguing.
Since the Maidana defeat, many people are down on Victor Ortiz. It is widely believed that Ortiz hasn’t and will never recover from the beating he took that night; a viewpoint that’s hard to argue as he’s appeared tentative in some fights, lacking the killer instinct he once had. Because of this, a majority of the boxing world think that this is just another cakewalk for Berto. Many claim Berto, in facing Ortiz, is only continuing his lackluster reign as champ, beating another smaller, 140lb fighter.
I don’t subscribe to this notion. Ortiz, in my view, is the toughest challenger that Berto has had. Berto has never fought a fighter with the combination of speed and power as Ortiz does.
The key for Berto is his need to use his speed to pepper Ortiz. Getting too close could spell disaster against a power puncher like Ortiz. On the flip side, Ortiz isn’t going to win a decision. Berto is the faster fighter and the better boxer. Ortiz needs to break Berto down to the body, slowing the champ’s pace in the process. After one round of feeling each other out, I think this fight will really pick up from round 2 onward. Both guys like to mix it up and both guys have a lot to prove; two ingredients that almost always lead to fireworks inside the ring. Because of this and the fact that both guys have questionable stamina, I think it is very possible that both men go down in the first half of the fight and that one guy ends it inside of 10 rounds. The winner of this fight will be the one that can better deal with the inevitable adversity that will occur inside that ring come April 16th. Ortiz has already failed that test one before. Edge Berto.
